A Tour of The Commercial Past

The world of advertising and product promotions gained strength in the 1950's. The times where good, we had won wars in Europe and the South Pacific, the first Beaver was on TV, and the future was looking up. Out of this time came the brands that would become household names. These items are the focus of the Tick Tock Toys website and archive. The site is full of images from the brands of the past, packaging from the past and ads. Food packaging, cereals, candy, ad, and fast food items fill up this website. The collection is wide ranging and well worth the bookmark for inspiration and research. Check it out and see where it all come from.

State Motto Project

The State Motto Project is an interesting and surprising collection of illustrations, type and good design. The project by the collective 50 and 50 invited 50 designers to represent their state's motto as an illustration. The illustrations that have been posted thus far are a tribute to design and all things retro. New illustrations are posted often and show the range and depth of design from across our great country. Enjoy this site showcasing our history, strengths, design and the crazy mottos of the states.

How It's Made: Blow Molding

Everyday we use items that designers spend substantial time creating. One such item of design is the plastic bottle. The video above demonstrates how a blow mold process is used to create a plastic bottle. Hopefully soon, chemistry will enable a complete use of bioplastics in the forming of bottles to help make it truly sustainable design.

Inspiration or Motivation? Carin Goldberg

I was cumming the waters of the world wide web looking for great design stuff and came upon a gem of a section at the AIGA site. The presentations from the 2009 Make/Think Design Conference are in video form on the site. I was especially taken by the wonderful presentation by Carin Goldberg, Inspiration or Motivation? The site describes Carin Goldberg's presentation as:
Inspiration. It looks good, tastes good and feels good. We are hooked on its revelatory highs and illuminating epiphanies, but inspiration is fleeting and ephemeral, always leaving us wanting. Motivation. Whether we are driven by money, neurosis, love, fame or revenge, our motivation is never as sweet as inspiration, but it does get us out of bed in the morning. Carin Goldberg shares what has inspired her work and what has motivated her to work over the last 30 years.
Goldberg describes our continuous search for great inspiration as "crack for a designer". The presentation is thoughtful and inspiring. Watch the video at this link and see additional videos from the Make/Think Conference that are also available to review in this section of the AIGA site. Enjoy and see what makes the AIGA conferences so good.

Daily Drop Caps!!

DAILY DROP CAP IS A PROJECT BY DESIGNER & ILLUSTRATOR JESSICA HISCHE. Since September of 2009, an illustrative initial cap has been posted daily (or at least regularly), to prettify the internet and beautify your blog posts. Individuals are welcome to use the drop caps on personal (non-commercial) sites within blog posts by following the instructions below each letter. The project will end after the twelfth alphabet is complete, but the site will remain up for your use and inspiration.

Chis project allows you to add "Drop Caps" to your stories on the web. Jessica has done a fabulous job of designing and allowing us all to experience and use her work. Each Drop Cap can be changed to the letter of your choice in the code that Jessica gives for each cap.

To see the complete line of Drop Caps, go to this link and have fun. Thank you Jessica for sharing the love on your site!!
