White Line Fever

Ever want and notebook or sketchbook with lines but not really? Do those black and blue lines make you use a blank sketchbook but you know your writing looks like a drunk sailor on leave? The solution has been found in a line of notebooks from a Swedish company, WhiteLined. The WhiteLines notebooks are printed with a slight line that is closer to a white then the normal black found in books. The faint line allow you to draw without the annoyance of dark lines but they are visible enough when you do need to write. From the Whitelines website:
Writing paper with dark supporting lines has been around since medieval times when iron gall ink was used for its lasting dark colour. It took until our recent time before the idea of making a writing paper with white, “non-conflict”, lines got known from an idea of the designer Olof Hansson. Writing paper with white lines is now a patented solution.

"The idea for Whitelines® came to me when I was copying a sketch of another product, Sinko. I was irritated because the lines on the copy made a mess of my sketch. It was then that the idea of having white lines hit me. White lines would not be visable on a photocopy, but the dark lines that I had written would. It is a pleasure for me to be able to offer these lines to you. I hope that Whitelines® is successfull in supporting your ideas."

They have a complete line of notebooks, Hard bound, Hard wire, Perfect bound, Wire, Orange glue, Saddle stitch, and even do custom editions. The A6 Hard bound is equal to a standard size moleskine. I love the concept and will have to try them out and see if they give my Moleskine a run for its money. Check out the full line and story at Whitelines. To order go to Amazon.com

Michael Bierut - Notebooks and T-Squares

Michael Bierut, partner at Pentagram and Design Observer editor, has written about 26 years of keeping notebooks. Over the years he has amassed 85 National Blank Book Company composition books. Read about it here.

I feel that all designers need to come up with a system to keep track of ideas and notes. I have been using Moleskines myself for the last several years and can't imagine leaving home without it. I use the 3.5" x 5.5" plain sketchbook version. The books are extremely well made and durable over time. My books are full of things I think would be great concepts (sometimes looking back they turn out not to be that great), books I see that I would like to pick up, sketches of ideas, websites that get my juices flowing, notes from client meetings, notes to remind me of what I should have or need to do, miscellaneous phone numbers or addresses, etc. Get yourself a system and use it, be it a National Blank Book Company composition book, a Moleskine or a sketchbook. You will find it illuminating with time. To see a collection of artist's sketchbooks check out this site. My friend Mike Tracy can also be found over at this link with his sketchbooks.

Michael also has an article in the New York Times this last weekend talking about how design has changed from his early days of using a T-Square to get the work done until today's digital age. Read about it here.
